Nurse Shift Differentials, Explained

What a differential is

A shift differential is extra pay on top of your base rate for working less popular hours or taking on extra responsibility. Common ones for nurses: night, evening, weekend, holiday, charge, preceptor and certification or specialty pay. Each employer sets its own list, amounts and rules.

Three ways differentials are paid

• Flat per hour — a fixed amount for every eligible hour, like $5/hour for nights.
• Percentage of base — a percent of your base rate for every eligible hour, like 10% for weekends. It's taken from base pay only, not from base plus other differentials.
• Per shift — a fixed amount once per shift, whatever its length.

Differentials for part of a shift

Many night differentials apply only between set hours, such as 11 PM–7 AM, so only part of a 7P–7A shift qualifies. With an unpaid break whose time isn't recorded, Nurse Pay spreads the break evenly across the shift, so the window's share of paid time is used:

Differentials and overtime

Hourly differentials usually raise the rate your overtime premium is paid on, because the regular rate is a blend of base and differential pay. Per-shift amounts don't. The overtime guide has a worked example.
