How this was calculated

Formula

Hourly = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks) = $85,000.00 ÷ 1,872 = $45.41.

What it leaves out

Overtime, shift differentials, bonuses, benefits, taxes and deductions. Monthly is annual ÷ 12.

Your real pay isn't just rate × hours.

Night, weekend and charge differentials and overtime change every paycheck. Nurse Pay for iPhone calculates each actual shift with your own rules, in seconds.

Worked example: $85,000 a year

On a 36-hour week (three 12s), $85,000 a year is $45.41/hour. On a 40-hour week it's $40.87/hour. The same salary is worth about $4.54 more per hour when you work fewer hours for it.

How the conversion works

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year). Weekly pay is the salary ÷ paid weeks; monthly is ÷ 12. Everything is rounded to the cent once.

This is straightforward arithmetic, not a feature of the Nurse Pay app: a salaried offer doesn't have differentials or overtime the way hourly pay does. To compare it to an hourly job, take the hourly result to the nurse pay calculator and add the differentials you'd earn.

Assumptions and limits

  • Excludes overtime, differentials, bonuses, benefits, taxes and deductions.
  • Use 52 paid weeks if your time off is paid. Subtract weeks you won't be paid.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a year does a full-time nurse work?

Commonly 1,872 (36 × 52) for three 12s a week, or 2,080 (40 × 52) for five 8s. Use your own schedule.

Is a salaried nurse position better than hourly?

It depends on how many hours you'll really work and whether you'd lose overtime and differentials. Convert both to hourly and compare.
